Boot camp training is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but advocates are effusive about the fitness benefits and the entire experience. If you’re tempted to take up the boot camp challenge, read on.

What is ‘boot camp’ training?

For boot camp workouts, think ‘group training sessions’, think ‘outdoors’ (whatever the weather and whatever the season!), think ‘fun’ and think ‘challenging’. Sessions are organised by fitness instructors in parks and open spaces for groups of approximately 20 people at a time — including both men and women. Sessions usually last for one hour and contain a broad mix of running and bodyweight exercises, which have the aim of providing an all-over body workout.

The majority of boot camp sessions take place in the early morning and early evening — typically 7am and 7pm — which proves popular with nine-to-five workers, who are able to fit in the invigorating training sessions around their working day. In these circuit-training-style sessions outdoors, you can expect to work hard and get hot and sweaty but also enjoy a new dimension to exercising because of the variety that the sessions bring.

Boot camp training benefits

By providing a mixture of exercises and cardiovascular training, a good boot camp session will work the heart and lungs and give almost every muscle in your body a workout. Sessions involve a warm-up and cool-down, bodyweight exercises, running, stretching, relays, and exercises with a partner. Training ‘al fresco’ is also invigorating — whether you’re training on a frosty winter morning or a balmy summer evening — and the team-based theme encourages participants to really put the effort in and achieve results.

Who is boot camp training suitable for?

Boot camp training is suitable for novice exercisers and fitness enthusiasts alike, because individuals will be allowed to work at their own personal level and intensity. Some sessions will also be specifically designed to introduce people to the boot camp concept.

A good boot camp session will include variations of each exercise to cater for varying abilities, and instructors will select balanced teams so that the competitive element remains fair. If a participant has an injury or is concerned about how challenging the session will be, then it is important to raise any concerns with the instructor at registration.

Where can I experience boot camp training?

Boot camp sessions take place at a wide variety of locations all over the country. Scan the local press or enquire at your local gym about sessions in your area. Subject to availability, you can often just turn up on the day, register, complete a health questionnaire, pay the session fee and get started …

What should I bring to a boot camp exercise session?

As sessions are all outdoors, you should dress appropriately for the time of year. Ideally, you should layer your clothing so that you can remove outer layers as you warm up. A lightweight waterproof jacket will help keep the wind and rain out in poor weather, and gloves are a must for those early morning winter sessions! Always take a bottle of water to keep hydrated because even in cold conditions you can lose a lot of fluid from breathing out. Hydration is even more important in the summer, when you will need to drink throughout your workout. It is also important to eat as soon as possible after your session ends to begin the refuelling and rebuilding process, which will optimise your recovery. Simply pack a snack in your kitbag that travels easily — such as a banana or bagel — which will help to keep your energy levels topped up until you can have a more substantial meal.

How much does a boot camp session cost?

Session fees vary according to the provider and which part of the country you’re in. Generally, though, you should expect fees to be similar to indoor exercise class prices for your area. Some providers require a signing-up registration fee, whereas for others it’s simply a ‘turn up and pay’ system. Block bookings and corporate packages are usually available at a discounted rate.

Is boot camp training really for me?

Only one person — you — can completely answer that question. But given the increasing popularity of this fitness concept — in spite of its early morning and ‘all weather’ challenges — it’s likely that you’ll be able to fit in easily, as it’s likely there will be other people at the sessions who have similar levels of fitness to you.

Boot camp gives you the opportunity to break away from a routine of either no exercise or simply going through the motions with your usual session. Add to this mix the motivational qualities of a good instructor, the camaraderie of group training and the refreshing nature of working out next to nature, and you have all the ingredients for a challenging fitness programme that can elevate your fitness to a much higher level than you could achieve alone.

If you’re still not sure, take a friend along to a sample class near you. In this way you’ll have more fun — and you’ll also have an instant partner for the relays and joint exercises.

Putting the effort into boot camping

Boot camp training forms the cornerstone of the fitness regimes used by the armed forces, who are arguably the all-round fittest group of people in our society. So the training system certainly works! Nothing worthwhile is achieved without effort and hard work — and the popularity of boot camp indicates that with our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the opportunity to burn off some calories and get a genuine total body workout that leaves you knowing you’ve had a tough session is very appealing. So why not put the trans boot in yourself and give boot camp fitness a go? You never know — you just might be surprised …

We had Elizabeth who joined us all the way from Nigeria, the course was booked by her daughter and she came with an open mind to the course.

All the Bootcampers worked extremely hard during the 5 days and achieved some very pleasing results at the end, but the most impressive was Elizabeth who lost 14lbs during the course, yes 1 stone of weight. She had it to lose but she still had to work very hard to achieve it, Well done Elizabeth.

During the 2 courses run in February we have our 2 Biggest losers Alan and Elizabeth, Alan with 12lbs and Elizabeth with 14lb, we are very excited about the Bootcamps to come.

All the Bootcampers embraced the week with open arms and absorbed everything we threw at them, which in turn enabled then to reach the great results that they had. Well to to you all.

The biggest loser of the week was Alan from Portsmouth.

He lost 12 Lbs in Weight

9% of Body fat

Nearly 4 inches from his waist

But most importantly his blood pressure came right down.

Alan has left us with a new spring in his step and looking physically better for his week with us. Well done Alan

What is Gluten? It is apparent that today this question is more important than ever. So let’s waste no time and get right to a matter that is near and dear to my heart. Gluten, in its most simplest definition, is a kind of protein that tends to exist in wheat, barley, and rye among other carbohydrates. It is important to note that, despite a wide spread misconception, gluten alone is not necessarily bad for your health. It simply is. However, some people do have difficulty digesting gluten and therefore must avoid it. Still, when answering the question what is gluten it is best to stick to the facts and the facts alone and that is what I intend to do.

One very common misconception about gluten is that it simply is grain. While, yes, gluten is typically found in wheat and other mainstays in the grain family, it is not synonymous with grain. Gluten is a component of grains and cereals. This fact does not imply sameness for simple inclusion in the grain family does not ensure that a food stuff will contain gluten. For example, many kinds of grains don’t even include a molecule of gluten. And this gets to the heart of the question what is gluten. Because, if grains can exist without gluten then, by definition, gluten cannot be grain! Duh! For instance amaranth, oats (though there is some controversy about this), buck wheat, and soybeans are all gluten free foods.

So if gluten is not grain then just what is gluten? Gluten is made up of several defining characteristics. For example, gluten has insolubility to water meaning it will not dissolve when placed in some good, old fashioned H20. It can, on the other hand, be expunged from grain, (and this is a unique characteristic that defines what is gluten) by kneading your base dough stringently. Though, to be honest, this can be a controversial topic and for many with a gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity it is the best practice to abstain from consuming gluten containing foods.

Perhaps we are now starting to get a grip on the answer to our most elementary question: What is gluten? Let’s go further and look at some of the defining characteristics of gluten in bread, the food it is most often associated with. Bread of course has many unique characteristics and it is the gluten within it that actually causes a great many of these traits. For instance, it is gluten that gives bread the bendy, chewy composition that we are all so familiar with. Due to this, bread that has been depleted of gluten tends to revert to a puddy-like, sticky glob of goo as it is gluten which gives it its shape.

A gluten intolerance, wheat allergy and celiac disease may all have common symptoms and all are treated with a gluten free diet. If you are not sure which degree of an allergy you have be sure to see a doctor for a blood test. A wheat allergy is very different than celiac disease. Wheat allergy symptoms much like celiac can range from skin rash to swelling, migraines or even difficulty breathing. Once the allergen is removed from the body or antihistamine is administered successfully, the body is not compromised in the long term as it is for those with celiac disease and are exposed to gluten.

A gluten intolerance is another condition that needs a gluten free diet. A gluten intolerance occurs when the body is incapable of metabolizing certain foods, typically because it lacks certain enzymes to break down food components associated with gluten. Symptoms of gluten intolerance are similar to celiac disease as well. You can have a gluten intolerance and have a negative reading on a celiac disease blood test.

Symptoms of Gluten Allergies

Symptoms of gluten allergies may include one or more of the following:

Rickets

Autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus

Kidney Stones
